Susan and Bob turned their life-defining moment of not getting pregnant into an overwhelming yes to open adoption. They showed by example how their unconventional family includes loving relationships with their daughter’s birth parents, their birth parents’ spouses and children, and all of their extended families. Without a real plan other than to be in each other’s lives and make decisions based on what was best for their daughters, they moved forward, one yes at a time, embracing each opportunity without knowing the outcome. The first visit to see the baby turned into thirty years of going through life together, bonding over countless gatherings, celebrating birthdays, graduations, and even their daughter’s wedding. It continues to this day.

 

Through intimate essays outlined in her book, Susan makes the case that open adoption works when all parties make the choice to commit to one another, they trust each other and love is the magic thread that pulls it all together. Their daughters know their story of how they came to be; they witness the bond between their parents and birth parents, and they are free to live an unencumbered life, knowing they belong. Transparency was the goal for Susan and Bob, so open adoption became their choice. This bold decision led them on a journey of self-discovery, growth, and unconditional love.
